Documented decoder coverage, 1941 to 2020

Vintage Coach,catalogued.

Decode a Creed serial against documented formats. For whole-bag comparison, take the Vintage Handbag Identifier with you.

The instrument

The Creed reader

Type the serial exactly as stamped. Worn characters are handled: a capital I becomes a 1, a capital O becomes a 0. The decode happens in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.

To compare character lengths and dash positions first, use the Coach serial number lookup and format guide.

On a 1994-onward letter-led serial, search the documented style-number index. Otherwise, choose a starting point from the Coach reference index.

The month letters

In the supported month-coded formats introduced in 1994, the first letter represents the month. Check the whole format before applying this table.

I is not a month code in these formats. An apparent I may be a misread 1, including in an older numeric serial. Compare the original stamp and the full format; this character alone cannot establish authenticity.

Type it as printed. Letters, digits and the dash are all that matter, and case does not.

Try

Enter a serial and the reading appears here. Nothing is uploaded; the decode runs entirely in your browser.

A serial reading describes format, not authenticity. It cannot confirm a bag is genuine, and it is not an appraisal. Have high-value purchases checked by a qualified professional.

What a serial cannot tell you

It cannot tell you the bag is authentic. Serials are printed on a patch, and a patch can be reproduced. What a serial gives you is a consistency check. If the format does not match the era the bag appears to be from, that is a reason to look harder at the construction, the hardware and the lining.

It cannot tell you what the bag is worth. Condition, colour and demand decide that, and none of them are encoded in a serial.

For anything expensive, have a qualified professional look at it in person. This is a reference, and a reference is a starting point rather than a verdict.

Common questions

What is a Coach Creed?

Coach now calls the interior patch a Storypatch; collectors often call its text the Creed. Documented serial formats can help place a bag in an era, and later letter-led formats may encode a month and year. The plant token is recorded, but this reference does not map it to a named factory.

Can a serial number tell me if my bag is authentic?

No. A serial number can be copied, and a well-made counterfeit can carry a plausible one. What a serial does tell you is whether the format is consistent with the era the bag appears to be from. Treat a mismatch as a reason to look harder, not as proof either way.

Why does my serial not decode to a year?

Within this reference's documented decoder coverage, the 0000-000 and 000-0000 formats carry no encoded date. They can place a bag in a decoder-coverage era, and that is all they can honestly do. The later letter-led formats may encode a month and year.

No. Vintage Bag Index is an independent reference. Coach is a trademark of its owner, used here only to describe the bags being identified.
