Coach serial numbers before 1994
This is the question that sends most people in circles. You have an older bag, you have found the serial, and no amount of rearranging the digits produces a plausible year. That is because there is no year in there to find.
The two older formats
000-0000
1941 to 1979
Three digits, a dash, then four. A production reference, with no encoded month, year or plant.
0000-000
1980 to 1993
Four digits, a dash, then three. The reverse of the earlier shape, and again carrying no date.
Note how easily those two are confused. The only difference is which side of the dash holds four digits, and on a worn patch that is a genuinely easy thing to misread. Getting it wrong shifts your estimate by decades.
Dating an older bag without a date code
Physical evidence carries the weight instead. Dimensions are the strongest single signal, because catalogues recorded them and because they do not change with wear. Measure width, height and depth at the widest points, then the strap drop.
After that, look at the hardware finish, the shape of the turnlock, the lining, and whether the Creed text itself mentions a factory. Each one narrows the window. Together they usually get you to a production range of a few years, which is as precise as an undated serial permits.
Anyone offering you an exact manufacture date for a pre-1994 bag from the serial alone is guessing.
