Gucci serial number decoder

On most modern Gucci bags the number on the leather tag is two rows of digits. Resale guides call the first row the style number and the second the supplier code. Neither row is a date, and Gucci's help pages describe no lookup for it. Type the number into the decoder to see what each row is called.

Type both rows with a space between them. A dot or a dash works too.

Try

Enter the number and its rows appear here. What you enter is not uploaded. The reading runs in your browser.

A reading of the layout from published resale guides. It is not proof of age or authenticity, and it is not an appraisal.

Looking for a Gucci serial number checker? This decoder only splits the number into its two rows and says what published guides call each one. It does not check authenticity, look the number up in any Gucci record or say when a bag was made.

Vintage Bag Index is independent and not affiliated with or endorsed by Gucci.

Where to find the number

Yoogi's Closet says the number is pressed into the back of a leather tag, and that the tag is sewn into the top seam of an interior pocket or trim. coutureusa.com says to flip the tag over to find it.

myGemma describes the front of a modern tag as three stamped lines: the registered trademark symbol, the GUCCI name and a lowercase line naming the country of origin. 1stDibs lists the same three stamps. Both place the number on the back of the tag.

Wallets and small leather goods are different. Pepper Luxury Vintage says the number is usually stamped straight into the interior with no separate tag. coutureusa.com places it near the card slots, in one line with a dash between its two parts, and Bagaholic describes a dot in the same place.

Type the two rows with a space between them. A number in one line can be typed with its dot or dash.

The front shows three stamped lines: marker 1 points at the trademark symbol, marker 2 at a bar standing for the house name and marker 3 at a bar standing for the origin line. What the two rows are

Every guide in the table puts the style or model number first and a supplier, batch or factory code second. They differ on the names and on how many digits to expect, so each guide keeps its own row.

The number on a Gucci tag: total digits and row names, by guide
GuideTotal digitsFirst rowSecond row

LePrixAround 10 to 13Style numberSupplier code
coutureusa.com9 to 13Model numberSupplier or batch number
Pepper Luxury VintageNot statedModel or style numberUsually five to seven digitsSupplier or batch code

Take 123456 over 654321, a made-up number. The first row, 123456, is what the guides call the style number. The second row, 654321, is what they call the supplier code. That is twelve digits, which sits inside every total in the table. None of it says when a bag was produced.

The guides also differ on how long a row is. Yoogi's Closet says no row has more than six digits. coutureusa.com describes two rows of six, or a row of six over a row of four. Yoogi's Closet and Fashionphile both describe the number as digits only.

Yoogi's Closet says the second row is used to determine the factory location. None of the guides read publishes a list that ties a code to a named supplier, factory or place, and this page names none.

Why the number gives no year

No guide read for this page finds a date in either row, and the decoder gives none.

Yoogi's Closet says the number will not tell you what year a bag was made.

Pepper Luxury Vintage says it does not show the exact year of production.

Luxbags says it is not a date code of the kind some other houses use.

It is not unique to one bag either. Yoogi's Closet says any bag in the same style has the same first six numbers.

The second row is a different matter. coutureusa.com says it can be the same as on other pieces, and Luxbags lists one style number beside two different second rows, so bags in one style do not always share it.

Older tags, and bags with no number

The guides agree that older tags look different and disagree on the dates, so each guide has its own line here. They do not agree on the 1970s: coutureusa.com has consistent numbering starting then, Bagaholic has the first numbers then, and Pepper Luxury Vintage has them largely disappearing.

For that reason this page gives no first year for Gucci numbers, and the decoder gives no period for a number typed in three or more groups.

A bag can also have no number at all. Pepper Luxury Vintage says a code may never have been added to an older bag, or may have faded with use. A missing number does not date a bag on its own, and it does not show whether a bag is genuine.

Yoogi's Closet
Tags from before 1990 may have rounded corners, capital lettering, no trademark symbol and numbers broken up with hyphens and full stops.
myGemma
Bags from before 1990 have a different layout of numbers.
Pepper Luxury Vintage
The rectangular tag with two rows is usual after around 1990. Numbers appeared irregularly in the 1960s and largely disappeared in the 1970s.
coutureusa.com
Serial numbers were used consistently only from the 1970s. From the mid 1990s to the mid 2000s the top row was typically three digits, a dot or dash, then four digits.
Bagaholic
No numbers before the 1970s. Most bags from the 1970s to the 1990s had one, written in three groups. The rectangular tag first appeared in the 1990s.
Codogirl
The rectangular tag is typically found from the late 1990s onward.

Numbers that are not the serial number

A Gucci bag can come with several other numbers and codes. The decoder recognises two of them, the digits on the Controllato card and a Style line copied from gucci.com, and says which one it is instead of reading it as a tag.

On the Gucci FAQ the term serial number itself appears only for watches: a unique number of eight digits engraved on the back of the case.

  1. Controllato card

A card that comes with a bag

LePrix describes the digits 1234567890 at the bottom of the card, under the word controllato. 1stDibs describes ten numbers there, and says the card records that a bag was inspected after it was finished.

Codogirl calls the card generic to new bags, not unique to one.

  2. Black fabric tag

A second tag on more recent bags

Fashionphile describes a small black folded tag with code squares and a series of numbers and letters. Guides disagree on what the code does. Fashionphile's Marmont guide and The RealReal say it is for Gucci's internal use and will not scan on a smartphone. Codogirl says a smartphone can scan it, and Luxbags says it needs the Gucci App.

They differ on when the tag appeared as well: Luxbags says around 2014, 1stDibs says 2016 and Codogirl says 2016 or 2017.

Luxbags and LegitApp publish the same chart that ties this tag's label number to a year. Neither says where the chart comes from, and neither Gucci's pages nor the reseller guides read for this page repeat it, so it is not used here.

  3. Style line on gucci.com

Six digits, five characters, four digits

A Gucci product page prints a line that starts with the word Style, then six digits, five letters or digits, and four digits. Gucci does not say there what the second and third groups mean, and this page does not interpret them.

  4. Gucci Authenticity Tag

An NFC tag on selected items

The Gucci Authenticity Tag page describes an NFC tag on selected items. It gives information about the item when a phone is held near it with the Gucci App, and the page names a selection of bags, silks and scarves and travel items. It says nothing about the number on the leather tag.

Four things that are not the number on the leather tag. Drawn for this page, with no house lettering. The Style line shown is made up.

Can you look a Gucci serial number up?

The Gucci FAQ says it guarantees the authenticity of products bought on Gucci.com and in Gucci stores, and gives an email address for reporting counterfeits. It describes no serial number lookup for bags. The Australian Gucci FAQ carries the same sentences. Both were read on 5 October 2026.

What Gucci does describe for a single item is the Gucci Authenticity Tag, an NFC tag on selected items from its latest collections that is read with the Gucci App.

coutureusa.com says the model number can be used to find an item on a search engine, and LePrix says the top number can be searched in the same way. This page does not say what a search result means for a particular bag.

The decoder on this page looks nothing up. It splits the number you type and reports what the guides call each part.

What a serial number does not tell you

A year
Yoogi's Closet says the number will not tell you what year a bag was made, and Pepper Luxury Vintage says it does not show the exact year of production.
A supplier or a place
Yoogi's Closet says the second row is used to determine the factory location, but none of the guides read publishes a list that ties a code to a named supplier, factory or place, and this page names none.
Which model it is
Luxbags says the same model does not always share one style code, and coutureusa.com says model numbers can change as items change over the years. This page does not match a style number to a model.
Whether the bag is genuine
Pepper Luxury Vintage says a serial number is not proof of authenticity, because counterfeit bags can have one too.
More than the app names
The “What can we identify?” sheet in Vintage Handbag Identifier lists Gucci at a family only, with no year from a mark. A photo result names a family, and the app holds no catalogue records for Gucci.

Questions about Gucci serial numbers

How do I read a Gucci serial number?

Turn over the leather tag inside the bag. Most modern tags show two rows of digits. 1stDibs, The RealReal and Fashionphile describe the first row as the style number, and the second as the supplier code or factory code. 1stDibs and The RealReal count 10 to 13 digits in total.

Can I look up a Gucci serial number?

Gucci's FAQ describes no serial number lookup for bags, on the US and Australian pages as read on 5 October 2026. What it does describe is the Gucci Authenticity Tag, an NFC tag on selected items that is read with the Gucci App. coutureusa.com says the model number can be used to find an item on a search engine. This decoder only splits the number into its two rows.

What year is my Gucci bag from its serial number?

The number does not say. Yoogi's Closet says a Gucci serial number will not tell you what year a bag was made, and Pepper Luxury Vintage says it does not show the exact year of production. Both describe it as a style number and a supplier code.

Sources: Yoogi's Closet, Pepper Luxury Vintage.

Why does my Gucci bag have no serial number?

Look for it pressed into the leather first. Pepper Luxury Vintage says wallets and small leather goods usually carry the number inside with no separate tag, and coutureusa.com places it near the card slots. On an older bag, Pepper Luxury Vintage says a code may never have been added or may have faded with use, and Bagaholic says old bags can have none. A missing number does not date a bag on its own, and it does not show whether a bag is genuine.

Is the number on the Controllato card a serial number?

The guides do not describe it as one. LePrix describes the card as printed with the digits 1234567890, and 1stDibs says it records that a bag was inspected after it was finished. Codogirl describes the card as generic to new bags and not unique to one.

Sources: LePrix, 1stDibs, Codogirl.

Can a serial number prove a Gucci bag is authentic?

No. Yoogi's Closet says the numbers are not unique, so every bag in a style carries the same style number, and Pepper Luxury Vintage says counterfeit bags can also have a serial number. Gucci's FAQ says it guarantees the authenticity of products bought on Gucci.com and in Gucci stores. Pepper Luxury Vintage says the number mainly serves as a consistency check. It is not proof that a bag is genuine, and it is not an appraisal.
