What do the letters in a Coach serial mean?

On a letter-led serial from 1994 to 2006, the first letter reads as a month. The letters run A to M in order and skip I, so September is J and December is M. The character after the year digits is the plant code, recorded as printed. A long-form serial from 2006 to 2020 also opens with one of these letters, but sources disagree on reading that format, as the chart above notes. Serials from before 1994 are all digits, with no month letter.

How to read the year in a Coach serial number

On a letter-led serial from 1994 to 2006, the digits after the month letter are the year. Essex Fashion House and LegitGrails both describe one digit up to 2003 and two from 2004. Sources disagree on a single 0, so the reader shows both readings for it.

The documented 1994-onward decoder formats do not use I as a month letter. An apparent I in a worn or scanned serial may be the digit 1, and pre-1994 formats can begin with that digit, so the character alone is not an authenticity signal.

How long is a Coach serial number?

The four formats this guide reads have 6 to 10 letters and digits plus one dash, so 7 to 11 characters in all. Serials from before 1994 have 8 characters, such as 304-5912 or 0259-416. Letter-led serials from 1994 to 2006 have 7 to 9, such as K8P-9870. The long form used from about 2006 has 11, such as B1980-38124. Outlet codes with a letter after the dash, such as the 12-character F0779-F10909, fall outside these four formats, and this reader does not date them.

What does a Coach serial number mean?

On a letter-led serial from 1994 to 2006, the characters before the dash read as a month letter, a one- or two-digit year and a plant code, and the digits after the dash are the style number. K8P-9870 reads as October 1998, plant code P, style number 9870. A serial from before 1994 is all digits and does not encode a date. The plant code is a recorded token, not a factory name; this guide does not map it to a place. The reading is a format check; it cannot show that a bag is genuine.

Do pre-1994 serial numbers contain a date?

No. Coach serial numbers from before 1994 do not contain a date. They are all digits, in one of two shapes: three digits, a dash and four digits, such as 304-5912, or four digits, a dash and three digits, such as 0259-416. This guide treats both as production references with no month, year or style number in them, so an older bag is placed in an era by comparing its style, measurements, hardware and closure with catalogue records.

How to read a Coach serial number

On a letter-led serial from 1994 to 2006, read left to right: month letter, year (one or two digits), plant code, then the style number after the dash.

K8P-9870 reads as K = October, 8 = 1998, P = plant code as printed, 9870 = style number. In this index, style 9870 is the Court Bag: a crossbody, W 9.75 × H 7.5 × D 3.75 in, catalogue years 1989 to 2001, 46 source records. The style number points to that record; it does not prove that a bag carrying the code is that style.

Where to find the serial number on a Coach bag or purse

Look inside the bag for the interior patch. Coach now calls it a Storypatch; collectors often call its text the Creed. The serial is usually the last line on the patch, often after "No.".

Some bags from 2014 onward carry the code on a small white tag inside the bag instead. Essex Fashion House says Coach did this from 2014 until 2016 and that the tag is often in a corner of an inner pocket. LoveToKnow dates the change to late 2014 and describes the tag sewn into a seam in a bottom corner or inside an interior pocket.

Codes this reader does not date

Some Coach codes sit outside the four formats in the chart above. The reader does not put a date on them.

  • Outlet codes. A letter before the style digits, as in F0779-F10909 or M1592-F36704. Essex Fashion House describes F-prefixed style numbers as made for Coach outlet stores, and LoveToKnow says F marks a bag made for factory and sold at outlets. Both examples have 12 characters.
  • Formats from about 2020 onward. Essex Fashion House and LoveToKnow both describe newer codes where the part after the dash is a letter and four digits, four digits or three digits, such as H2081-C0769. Both also list two letters and three digits after the dash, such as D2281-CA123; Essex dates that shape to 2022. The reader shows codes with a letter after the dash as not dated. Codes with only digits after the dash, such as Essex's example L2023-6019, match none of the formats it documents, so it says they do not match.
  • White-tag codes with a letter after the dash, such as LoveToKnow's white-tag example G1493-F21227.
  • Partial codes. The reader only sees the characters you type, so a code with characters missing from a worn patch can match the wrong format or none.

Is there a Coach serial number database?

Not a public one that resolves a serial to an individual bag, and this reference does not claim to be that. What is documented here is the set of serial formats and what each one can be read to mean, alongside a catalogue of 1,237 documented Coach styles from 1981–2010 (after 1999, from the Coach catalogues reviewed so far). A 1994-onward serial ends in a style suffix that may point to one of those catalogue records, but the serial does not identify a single physical bag, and two bags of the same style share the suffix.

What if a Coach bag or purse has no serial number?

Some early bags never carried one, and a later Creed can be too worn to read. A missing serial is not proof of authenticity or counterfeit. Compare measurements, closure, hardware, construction and Creed details with documented catalogue records. No single feature establishes authenticity, and measurement methods or wear can introduce variation.

Can two Coach bags have the same serial number?

Yes. A letter-led serial from 1994 to 2006 reads as a month, a year, a plant code and a style number, so it identifies a production format, not one bag. Every bag of a style shares the style number after the dash, and on this reading, bags of one style made in the same month at the same plant would share the whole code.

Can a serial number lookup authenticate a Coach bag?

No. This lookup does not authenticate a Coach bag. It is a consistency check: a format can agree with the apparent era, but a plausible serial can still be copied onto a counterfeit patch.

Reading a worn patch

Old Creed patches lose definition. The two characters that cause the most trouble are the capital O against a zero and the capital I against a one. Tilt the bag under a lamp rather than guessing, because the stamped impression usually still holds the shape even when the ink has gone.

If the last line of the patch has rubbed away entirely, the serial is not recoverable. In that case the bag has to be identified from its shape, hardware and dimensions instead, which is what the identification guide walks through.
