Coach Serial Number Lookup & Format Guide

Start with the characters and dash position. The decoder matches them to documented formats and shows whether they carry a date or only an era.

Apply all four formats at once

Type the serial and let the reader choose the documented format.

Type it as printed. Letters, digits and the dash are all that matter, and case does not.

Try

Enter a serial and the reading appears here. Nothing is uploaded; the decode runs entirely in your browser.

A serial reading describes format, not authenticity. It cannot confirm a bag is genuine, and it is not an appraisal. Have high-value purchases checked by a qualified professional.

How long is a Coach serial number?

There is no single fixed length. Within this reference's documented decoder coverage, a serial has six to ten letters and digits, plus the dash. The pre-1994 formats have seven digits; the 1994–2006 letter-led format varies; and the 2006–2020 long form has ten letters and digits.

What does a Coach serial number mean?

Within this decoder coverage, a format labelled before 1994 does not encode a date and is treated as a production reference. Within the documented decoder coverage from 1994 onward, the later formats may encode a month and year alongside a plant code and style number. The plant code is a recorded token, not a factory name; this guide does not assert a public mapping for those codes.

What if a Coach bag has no serial number?

Some early bags never carried one, and a later Creed can be too worn to read. A missing serial is not proof of authenticity or counterfeit. Compare measurements, closure, hardware, construction and Creed details with documented catalogue records. No single feature establishes authenticity, and measurement methods or wear can introduce variation.

Do pre-1994 serial numbers contain a date?

No. Within this decoder coverage, the 000-0000 and 0000-000 formats are treated as production references. They can place a bag in a documented decoder era, but they cannot supply an exact manufacture date.

Can a serial number lookup authenticate a Coach bag?

No. This lookup does not authenticate a Coach bag. It is a consistency check: a format can agree with the apparent era, but a plausible serial can still be copied onto a counterfeit patch.

Documented decoder coverage

1941-1979

000-0000

Era only. These serials carry no month, year or plant letter to decode.

Example 304-5912

1980-1993

0000-000

Era only. The digits are a production reference, not an encoded date.

Example 0259-416

1994-2006

A0A-0000

Month letter, year, recorded plant token and a style number that maps to the catalogue.

Example K8P-9870

2006-2020

A00AA-00000

Month letter, two-digit year, recorded plant token and a five-digit style number.

Example B1980-38124

The month letter

Within the 1994-onward decoder coverage, the first character is read as a month letter. The documented sequence runs A through M and skips I.

  • AJanuary
  • BFebruary
  • CMarch
  • DApril
  • EMay
  • FJune
  • GJuly
  • HAugust
  • JSeptember
  • KOctober
  • LNovember
  • MDecember

The documented 1994-onward decoder formats do not use I as a month letter. An apparent I in a worn or scanned serial may be the digit 1, and pre-1994 formats can begin with that digit, so the character alone is not an authenticity signal.

Reading a worn patch

Old Creed patches lose definition. The two characters that cause the most trouble are the capital O against a zero and the capital I against a one. Tilt the bag under a lamp rather than guessing, because the stamped impression usually still holds the shape even when the ink has gone.

If the last line of the patch has rubbed away entirely, the serial is not recoverable. In that case the bag has to be identified from its shape, hardware and dimensions instead, which is what the identification guide walks through.
