Where Coach Serial Number Guides Disagree

Five Coach serial number guides compared on the 1994 to 2006 code, a single 0, the long form and outlet F codes, plus the readings this site has corrected.

By Updated

Published Coach serial number guides agree on how to read a 1994 to 2006 code such as K8P-9870. They part ways on three things: what a single 0 year means, whether the long form such as B1980-38124 carries a readable year, and what to make of outlet codes with an F after the dash. The table sets out what five guides say about each. Further down are the readings this site’s own decoder has changed.

What each guide says, checked 26 September 2026
Guide 1994 to 2006 code Single 0 year Long form, B1980-38124 Outlet F code
Essex Fashion House Month letter, one or two year digits, place letter, style number. K8P-9870 is October 1998. 2000. The two-digit 04 starts in 2004. Reads it as February 2019. An F before the style number marks a bag made for Coach outlet stores. No date given.
LoveToKnow Month letter, year digit (later two), plant code, style number. Example F5D-9966. Not addressed. Describes longer codes from around 2006 with five-digit style numbers. No year reading. An F after the hyphen marks a bag made for outlet sale. No date given.
LegitGrails Month, year (one digit to 2003, two from 2004), plant, style. K8P-9870 is October 1998. Its two sources disagree, so it returns both: 2000, or 2004 or later. Says no public key exists. Names the format and gives no date. Not covered.
underpriced.app Month, year and plant clues plus a style number to search. Not addressed. Not addressed. Lists a factory or outlet style marker as its own kind of evidence. No date given.
Vintage Bag Value About 1994 to 2014: month letter, year digit or digits, plant letter, style number. 2004 or later, because Coach used no zero year digit before 2004. Not described. Says the code moves to a sewn-in fabric tag from about 2014. Not covered.
Vintage Bag Index, from 26 September 2026 Month letter, year, plant code as printed, style number. K8P-9870 is October 1998. Shows the month, then “2000, or 2004 or later”. Shows the 2006 to 2020 format, with 2019 as unconfirmed. Not dated.

Where the guides agree

All five read a letter-led code left to right: a month letter, a year, a plant code and, after the dash, the style number. Essex Fashion House and LegitGrails both give K8P-9870 as October 1998. Essex, LegitGrails and Vintage Bag Value all say the month letters skip I.

A single 0: 2000, or 2004 or later

Essex counts the year digits forward from 4 for 1994 and gives 0 to 2000, with 04 arriving in 2004. Vintage Bag Value takes the opposite view: in its reading Coach had no zero year digit before 2004, so a leading 0 means 2004 or later. LegitGrails describes the same split between its two sources and hands back both readings. LoveToKnow and underpriced.app do not address the question, and none of the five points to a Coach document for either answer.

The long form: a year, or no public key

Essex reads B1980-38124 as February 2019, taking the two digits after the month letter as the year. LegitGrails labels the format “no published key”. It reports that one source takes those digits as a year while two others say there is no key, so it names the format and stops. LoveToKnow describes longer codes from around 2006, with examples such as B1182-16808, but gives no year reading. The other two guides do not describe the format.

Outlet codes with an F after the dash

Essex describes a style number with an F in front of it, such as M1592-F36704, as the format of bags made for Coach outlet stores. LoveToKnow says an F after the hyphen marks a bag made for factory sale at outlets, in store or online. underpriced.app treats a factory or outlet marker as a separate kind of evidence. None of the five reads a month and year out of one of these codes.

The F that marks an outlet code is the one after the dash. An F at the very start of a 1994 to 2006 code is the month letter for June, as in LoveToKnow’s example F5D-9966. A code such as F0779-F10909 has an F in both places, and that is what caught out this site’s reader.

Where this site was wrong

Before a fix merged on 24 September 2026, the Creed decoder here read F0779-F10909 as June 2001, plant code 0, style number 909. It passed over the part before the dash and read the F10909 after it as a 1994 to 2006 code, F10-909. Essex’s outlet example M1592-F36704 came back as June 2003 the same way, and LoveToKnow’s white-tag example G1493-F21227 as June 2002. Since that fix, the reader shows these codes as not dated, with a note that a letter before the style digits is outside what the reader dates.

Three more readings changed on 26 September 2026:

  • The earliest all-digit format carried a 1941 start year that the sources behind this site do not support. It now reads “Up to 1979”, and LoveToKnow puts the first Coach serials in the 1970s.
  • A single 0 used to come back as a plain 2000. The decoder now shows the month, then “2000, or 2004 or later”, and says the sources disagree.
  • The long form used to headline a month and year, so B1980-38124 read as February 2019. It now headlines the 2006 to 2020 format and shows 2019 as unconfirmed, naming Essex’s reading and LegitGrails’ position.

What this means for your bag

Where the guides split, the more useful reading is the one that says what is not known. The Coach serial number lookup and the Creed decoder show which format a code matches and which parts of the reading are disputed. For an all-digit code, Coach serial numbers before 1994 explains why it carries no date. To see which part of a code to search in the catalogue, read Coach serial number vs style number. After that, compare the bag itself: its shape, measurements, hardware and construction against catalogue records.

Sources and limits

Each guide was read as published on 26 September 2026 and is cited only for what its page says. The Essex guide is by Randi Gannon, dated 3 June 2020, and the LoveToKnow guide by Ketura Persellin, updated 10 September 2026. The old and new readings above come from running this site’s decoder at each point in its commit history. A serial reading checks a format. It does not authenticate a bag, and Vintage Bag Index is an independent reference that does not authenticate or appraise bags.
